A Principle based approach

All Salamanda Tandem’s work is established within a framework of guiding principles, these are values and methods developed over 3 decades and have been widely published by other academics, and by Isabel herself who through Salamanda Tandem, turned these tools into principles and a honed practice that has been taught extensively to artists, health care professionals, and teachers locally and all over the world. One of the core principles is the aim to learn from our own lived experience, and from others, to open out our world and nurture the art that difference makes. Only through diversity, can we ensure that all ST’s work is of high quality and consistently enables positive development for people.

We learn most through creative engagement with others.

Salamanda Tandem and Yoga

The principle of ‘equality’ is embedded in the Indian philosophy of yoga, and Ahimsa (non-violence) at its core. The practice should support the development of self reflexivity, not only of our thought processes, but also of our actions, as we study the causes and effects of harm on self and others.

In working with vulnerable people, and any situation where power is not evenly distributed, a critically reflective practice is crucial, so that we can develop the awareness to change our actions moment to moment.

The ultimate goal of yoga is to be more peaceful, and in harmonious communion with self, others and nature. As we translate this into a world, where ‘social justice’ and necessary activisms are needed, it become more complex and the question arises: how do we create activism without harm?

Salamanda Tandem has found a way, to realise that activism through Art.
