shanti mantra: acoustic music

Shanti Mantra: solo voice

One amazing and surprising thing about the studio is the gift of an acoustic for chanting – I could never have expected it. Such an unusual shape, and I’m sure no acoustic designer would have come up with its triangle monopitch form going up to a high apex as a concert hall. Yet the sound for both speech, and singing is clear and resonant, every individual sound can be heard and yet it is simultaneously gathered together in one holistic sound.

In the article, I describe my first experience of Aum, the sound of the universe, in collaboration with children on the autistic spectrum. Music, sound and chanting are embedded into the art of learning the ancient Indian yoga texts, and for me as both Iyengar Yoga teacher and professional singer/composer the connection is profound.

Sound is vibration and the source of all creation……

When the first Aum sounds at the beginning of each and every class, it becomes a place for devotion which resonates through the heart of our house – such a space is a gift from the gods and we are blessed to live here.
